Trisuits for Australian racing

A trisuit is one garment worn for all three legs, so it is built around compromises no single sport kit has to make. The pad has to be thin enough to swim and run in and still cushion a bike leg, the fabric has to shed water fast enough that you are not carrying it for 40km, and the fit has to hold through a swim exit and two transitions.

Sleeved and sleeveless

Sleeved suits test faster in the wind tunnel and give you sun coverage across the shoulders, which matters more in an Australian summer race than the aero gain does. Sleeveless suits run cooler and come off a wetsuit more easily. For most racing in this country the sun coverage settles it, and sleeved is the default.

The pad is the real difference

Triathlon pads are roughly 4 to 8mm, far thinner than the pad in a road bib short. A thick pad holds water through the swim and chafes on the run, which is the reason racing in bib shorts under a jersey costs you both comfort and transition time.

Distance changes the answer

For sprint and Olympic distance, prioritise a thin pad, a close fit and a front zip you can open for cooling. For 70.3 and full distance, look for slightly more pad, rear or leg pockets for nutrition, and a longer leg that stops chafe over four or more hours.

Fit

A trisuit should feel tighter than any other kit you own. A loose one fills with water on the swim, flaps on the bike and rides up on the run. If you are between sizes, size down.

Worn under a wetsuit for swim legs where one is allowed. We stock trisuits from Castelli, HUUB and Santini, and the rest of our triathlon range covers wetsuits, tri accessories and race day essentials. Our Adelaide showroom can fit you before race day.

トライスーツに関する質問

What is the difference between a trisuit and cycling kit?

The pad. A triathlon pad is roughly 4 to 8mm, where a road bib short pad is much thicker. The thin pad lets you swim and run in the same garment without it holding water or chafing, and it removes the need to change in transition. Trisuit fabric is also cut to shed water quickly and fit closer to the body.

Should I buy a sleeved or sleeveless trisuit?

Sleeved for most Australian racing. Sleeved suits test faster in the wind tunnel and cover your shoulders through a summer race, which matters more here than the aero gain does. Sleeveless suits run cooler and come off a wetsuit more easily, so they suit short course racing in high heat.

Do you wear a trisuit under a wetsuit?

Yes. The trisuit goes on first and stays on for the whole race, and the wetsuit comes off in the first transition. That is the point of the garment: no changing, and nothing to carry. Check whether your event is wetsuit legal, since that depends on water temperature on the day.

Can I try this on before buying?

Yes. Our Adelaide showroom at 122 Pirie Street carries most of our range and staff can fit you properly. Sizing across Italian and Australian brands varies enough that this is worth the trip if you are new to a brand.
