Castelli cycling apparel: 50 years of racing innovation

Castelli traces back to a Milan tailoring house founded in 1876, but the brand as cyclists know it began in 1974, when Maurizio Castelli turned his father Armando's company toward cycling-specific apparel. Since then it's built a track record of introducing things the rest of the category later copied: the first aerodynamic Lycra shorts in 1977, the first windproof jersey in 1983, the first fully aerodynamic skinsuit (built for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics), and the Gabba, widely credited as the first all-weather aero jersey, in 2010.

Sizing

Castelli is known for a genuinely race-tight fit, tighter than most other Italian brands on this list. If you're not racing and want a more relaxed feel, sizing up from your usual chart measurement is common advice for their jerseys and bibs.
