Pearl Izumi cycling apparel: seven decades of Japanese-founded design

Pearl Izumi traces back to a Japanese textile business founded in 1950 in Iida City, Nagano Prefecture, by Kinji Shimizu, which moved into cycling jersey manufacturing in 1964 and supplied jerseys for Japan's Olympic team at the 1968 Mexico City Games. The brand has a track record of early technical firsts: AERO-CUT paneling to reduce fabric drag in 1978, and Field Sensor sweat-wicking fabric in 1987, among the first of its kind anywhere.
