Winter cycling clothing built for Australian conditions

Winter riding in Australia is a wind and moisture problem more than a snow problem. Between June and August most of the country sees dawn starts between 2 and 8 degrees, and the temperature you feel on the bike is well below the number on the forecast once you add 30km/h of apparent wind. Getting dressed for that means managing three things at once: keeping wind off your chest, keeping sweat moving away from your skin, and keeping your hands, feet and neck warm enough to stay in control of the bike.

Start with the layer against your skin

A merino or synthetic base layer does more for winter comfort than any other single garment. It moves sweat off your skin so the air trapped in your jacket stays warm. Riders who skip this step and wear a heavy jacket over bare skin end up soaked and cold on the first descent.

Choose the outer layer by wind, not by temperature

Our winter jackets and long sleeve jerseys split into three groups. Thermal jerseys with brushed fleece linings suit 10 to 15 degrees and steady efforts. Windproof jackets with a treated front panel suit 5 to 12 degrees and are the most useful single purchase for Adelaide riders. Fully waterproof shells suit sustained rain, and they trade breathability for that protection, so they are worth owning rather than living in. A vest or gilet sits between the categories and covers the mornings that warm up fast.

Cover your legs properly

Knees are the first thing to complain in the cold. Below 15 degrees, most riders want thermal bib tights or, for variable days, knee and leg warmers over summer bibs.

Extremities decide whether you enjoy the ride

Cold hands and feet end more winter rides than a cold torso does. Full finger winter gloves, shoe covers and thicker socks are the cheapest comfort you can buy.

Winter cycling gear questions

What temperature is this winter cycling gear designed for?

Most of this collection is built for 0 to 15 degrees. Thermal jerseys and vests suit the 10 to 15 degree range, windproof jackets suit 5 to 12, and heavily insulated jackets and thermal bib tights suit anything below 5. Product pages list a temperature range where the brand publishes one.

How should I layer for a winter ride?

Three layers. A merino or synthetic base layer against the skin to move sweat, a thermal jersey for insulation, and a windproof jacket or vest on top. On milder mornings drop the middle layer. The most common mistake is one very heavy layer with nothing underneath, which traps sweat and gets cold the moment you stop climbing.

Do I need bib tights or will leg warmers do?

Leg warmers over summer bibs work down to about 12 degrees and give you the option to strip back when the sun arrives. Below that, thermal bib tights are warmer, more comfortable and stay put. If you ride through winter more than twice a week, buy the tights.

What size should I order?

Italian brands including Castelli and Santini run smaller than Australian sizing, typically one size. Pearl Izumi and MAAP run closer to true. Each product page links the brand's own size chart. Is waterproof or windproof more important?

Windproof, for most Australian riders. Wind chill is the dominant factor on a bike, and a windproof front panel with a breathable back handles the majority of winter mornings. Full waterproof shells matter when you commit to riding in sustained rain, and they breathe less, so they are worth having as a second jacket.

Do I really need shoe covers?

If your feet get cold you lose the ability to feel the pedals, and it is genuinely miserable. Cycling shoes are vented for summer, so airflow that helps in January works against you in July. Neoprene covers are the cheapest fix in winter cycling.

Can I try this on before buying?

How long does delivery take?

Orders start processing within one working day of your payment clearing. Australian orders of $100 or more ship free, and worldwide orders of $190 or more ship free. Express Post within Australia is $19.95, and orders placed before 4pm ACST go out the same day and typically arrive in 1 to 3 days.
