Bib shorts: the pad, the straps and the grippers

Bib shorts are the one piece of kit where comfort is decided at the point of purchase. Three things determine whether a pair still works for you three hours in: the density and shape of the pad, where the leg grippers sit, and how the straps carry the short so your waist does not have to.

Pad density beats pad thickness

A dense pad with variable-density zones under the sit bones holds its shape for hours. A thick, soft pad feels plush in the shop, compresses flat inside an hour and then does very little. This is the single most common buying mistake in cycling apparel. Women's pads are cut wider at the rear and shorter at the front to suit a different sit bone spacing, so the men's and women's versions of the same short are genuinely different garments.

Pads are worn against bare skin. Chamois cream reduces friction on rides over about two hours, and it is worth using well before you think you need it.

What the bib straps actually do

The straps carry the short from your shoulders, which means the waistband has no work to do. That is why bibs stay comfortable in a low position where a waistband would press into your stomach, and why almost every rider who tries both goes back to bibs. The cost is convenience at toilet stops, which is what bibless shorts solve with a wide, supportive waistband.

Leg grippers and leg length

A modern gripper is a wide band that holds by surface area. A gripper that digs a line into your thigh usually means the short is a size too small, and going up a size fixes it more reliably than changing brands. Race cuts sit higher on the thigh, endurance cuts run a little longer, and neither affects performance enough to override what you find comfortable.

Sizing and fabric

Bib shorts should feel tight standing up and correct once you are on the bike. Italian brands including Castelli and Santini cut smaller than Australian sizing, typically by one size. MAAP, Pearl Izumi and Isadore run closer to true.

One Australian specific: check the rear panel for opacity under stretch. Lighter colours and thinner fabrics can go sheer when you are in the drops, and it is easier to check in the fitting room than on a group ride.
